Webinar “Childhood and education of Russian emperors”
Date: 27.11.2024
Time: 10:00-10:30
The first mention of Novgorod in chronicles dates back to 859. A few years later, in 862, Varangian prince Rurik was invited to rule in Novgorod, making it the "Cradle of Russian Statehood." Situated at the crossroads of major waterways connecting Europe's North with the Black Sea and Mediterranean basins, Western Europe, and the East, Novgorod was a wealthy free city with developed crafts and trade. Here, the unique features of Russian culture emerged early on, manifesting themselves in Novgorod's architecture and monumental and easel paintings. Many monuments from that era have survived until today, making Novgorod an ancient Russian museum city. During the webinar, it will be possible to explore documents from the Presidential Library collection on the history of Novgorod and its art from the ancient Russian period.
