The first Soviet Oscar-winning film is shown at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Astana

The screening at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Astana of the Soviet documentary film "The Defeat of German Forces near Moscow" (Central newsreel studio, 1942) was devoted to an approaching 73rd anniversary of the Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.

Prior to the review, Viktor Nefyodov, head of the Rossotrudnichestvo office, told how the film appeared in the RCSC. In March of this year, the rector of the S. A. Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography Vladimir Malyshev visited it. He told about the work of VGIK, the world's oldest cinematographic educational institution, which this year marks 100 years. The VGIK collection stores a lot of valuable works of art, which are of great historical and artistic value. The film "Defeat of German troops near Moscow" is among them. It was shot directly during the fighting and went to the screens on February 23, 1942. And in 1943 it received an Oscar in the United States in the nomination "Best Documentary". This was the first ever Soviet documentary, which received wide international recognition. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of this event, discs with a restored film were produced, and one of them was presented by V.S. Malyshev to RCSC in Astana.

Veterans and representatives of organizations of Russian compatriots were invited to the film screening.

In the fields of Moscow region, the first major defeat of the German army in the Second World War was inflicted, the myth of its invincibility was dispelled. The Red Army wrested from the enemy the initiative and created the conditions for the transition to a general offensive. 50 German divisions were defeated. The Nazis lost more than half a million people, 1,300 tanks, 2,500 guns.

40 Soviet units and formations were awarded the title of Guards. 36 thousand soldiers and officers of the Red Army received orders and medals. 187 soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. On May 1, 1944, a medal "For the Defence of Moscow" was established, it was awarded to more than 1 million people.
