The Presidential Library’s workshop on "Knigabyte" to introduce librarians the archival part of its electronic collections
September 7, 2018, the Presidential Library will host a tutorial workshop for library community professionals, and for invited specialists of the remote centers of access for the library's electronic collections, as part of the business program of the "Knigabyte" section of the XXX Moscow International Book Fair (pavilion 75 of the VDNKh) - "Complicated Case: archive materials in the electronic library".
Maria Bystrova, Deputy Head of the User Service Department at the Presidential Library, will speak at the Presidential Library’s stand with this topic, which is more relevant to librarians and visitors to digital libraries, simultaneously revealing the specifics and capabilities of one of the most modern media libraries. During the workshop, participants will learn how the archive part of the Presidential Library's fund is formed, what documents it consists of, how to search for archive materials and what can be found among them.
The Presidential Library collections have about 640,000 units of storage, 30% of them are on the library portal, access to the entire fund is via a network of remote electronic reading rooms. The lecture will be accompanied by a spectacular presentation on the plasma screen, which will clearly demonstrate the algorithm and options for searching archive materials.
Revealing for narrow specialists the topic of searching for documents requested by the libraries, the Presidential Library specialist will focus on the features of simple and advanced search, competent work with which allows to speed up the work. Students learn about the principles of building search queries, techniques for simplifying and speeding up the search for necessary documents. And all this is based on the example of working with the digital fund of the Presidential Library.
It appears that the workshop will be of interest not only to specialists who are directly involved in servicing users of remote electronic reading rooms of the Presidential Library, but also those who plan to open such sites on the basis of the library or are going to use electronic resources.
September 8 and 9, two quizzes for children and their parents will be organized on the stand of the Presidential Library: "My familiar unfamiliar magazines" - a game-presentation of periodicals for children from the Presidential Library. Participants of the event will find out what they wrote about in the Murzilka in 1937 or in the magazine Kostyor for 1956. These and other children's publications in digital format from the Presidential Library collections are now available to everyone.
The second quiz is called "In the Heart of the Capital", it presents a game-presentation of materials on the history of the Moscow Kremlin from the Presidential Library collections. Participants will be asked questions related to the history of the Kremlin towers, the Tsar Cannon, Tsar Bells, etc.
The winners of the quiz will be awarded the latest issues of the magazine Murzilka, the number of issues of which has been digitized by the Presidential Library of different years; the children can now "leaf through" it on the library portal, find out how their age-mates lived during the Great Patriotic War and after it. Promising cooperation with the magazine will be developing, it is planned to conclude an agreement with the directorate of Murzilka.
During the work of the exhibition from September 5 to 9, 2018, an electronic reading room will be presented at the Presidential Library’s stand, where bibliographers will also assist readers in searching for electronic documents on the history of Russia, Russian law and the Russian language. Everyone will be able to get quick access to the Presidential Library entire collections, among which unique materials are digital copies of postcards with views of pre-revolutionary Russia, diaries of members of the imperial family, newsreels of the events of the Great Patriotic War and much more.
