2 November 2018

The Orthodox Cathedral and the Lutheran Church, a Muslim Mosque and a Buddhist Temple - these and many other objects of spiritual culture, located in Leningrad Region, are displayed at a mobile exhibition in the Presidential Library. The ceremonial opening of the exposition “The Sacred Sites of Leningrad Region”, prepared by the Friendship House of Leningrad Region, took place on Senate Square, 3.

“Several factors at once indicate that these paintings, which depict the sacred sites of Leningrad Region, should be located here”, - noted in his welcoming speech acting Director General of the Presidential Library Valentin Sidorin. - The Presidential Library is located in the historic building of the Holy Synod, which was engaged in the affairs of the Orthodox Church until 1917, but today one of the main activities of the institution is the preservation and dissemination of objective historical knowledge of Russia. In addition, the exhibition is opened on the eve of November 4 – the National Unity Day, namely, traditional religions are one of the most important foundations of the stability of society”.

Director of the Friendship House of Leningrad Region, Vladimir Mikhaylenko, in his turn, recalled that the cooperation agreement between the institutions was concluded on September 7, 2018: “After just two months, within the framework of the agreement, we are opening this unique exhibition, which I am sure will be the beginning of our effective cooperation. Leningrad Region has a rich history, culture, including spiritual. Over a thousand monuments of church architecture are represented in Region, and these are not only Orthodox churches, but also churches of other denominations with a centuries-old history. In the two years since the beginning of the project, over 70 similar exhibitions have been organized, which took place not only in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region, but also in other cities of our country”.

Authors of the paintings exhibited at the Presidential Library are participants in the Ethnovzglyad project of the House of Friendship of Leningrad Region. These are artists of different nationalities, professionals and amateurs, united in order to show the uniqueness of the multinational culture of the region, the natural and architectural beauty of these places.

The Presidential Library and Leningrad Region have been actively and successfully cooperating since 2014, when a corresponding agreement on cooperation was signed. During this time, a large number of joint projects were implemented in the fields of education, culture, tourism, ecology and others.
