
Presidential Library marking birthday of Leningrad Region
Leningrad Region was established on August 1, 1927. The 47th region turns 92. Major collection “Leningrad Region: Pages of History” devoted to is now available on the Presidential Library’s portal, including unique archival documents, photo and video materials on the history, geography and economy of the territory in the 18th - early 20th centuries.
The Presidential Library is developing a cooperation with Leningrad Region. As part of an agreement signed in 2014, 19 remote access centers to library resources have been opened in the region.
Thanks to virtual tours on the institution's portal, one can get familiar with the exhibition “North-West Russia: Two Areas - one History. Marking the 90th anniversary of the Leningrad region and the 80th anniversary of Vologda Region", the museum "Kobona: The Road of Life", also at Senate Square, 3, the exhibitions "Komsomol-volunteers. Kirishi - my Fate", "Elections in Leningrad Region: from the past to the future!".
The library often provides landmark events for the 47th region. At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum – 2019 it was signed an agreement on cooperation between the Presidential Library and Leningrad Region on the issues of vocational rehabilitation and employment promotion for people with disabilities, and their career guidance.
The results and prospects of the digitization of documents of Leningrad Regional State Archive of Vyborg were followed by the scientific-practical conference “Russian Archives and the Presidential Library: 10 years of cooperation”.
What is so remarkable in Leningrad region? First of all, of course, an ancient history.
Attracting numerous tourists Old Ladoga in the Volkhov district of the 47th region is called the first capital of Ancient Rus’. It was here, according to one of the chronicles, in 862-864 that Prince Rurik, the founder of the Old Russian state, was born.
Presidential Library’s electronic collections, provide access to E. Nelidova’s book “Rus’ in its Capitals” (1912), which tells not only about the “Scandinavian” trace in our history, but also about how before Rurik’s vocation here, on an important site most important way "from the Varangians to the Greeks" lived Slavs.

The village of Kobona, located on the eastern shore of Lake Ladoga, has gone down in history forever - this is where the famous Road of Life passed, linking besieged Leningrad with the Great Land. The virtual tour gives opportunity to explore the museum halls from any corner of the world, to get familiar with the original documents, diaries and photographs of wartime, to learn about the most complex logistics system built in the shortest time, which allowed Leningrad to stand in the siege. The interactive tour became one of the stages of the creation of the Open Museum of the memory of the defence and siege of Leningrad, which should unite in the digital space the museums of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region.
