World Photography Day celebrated in Mumbai

An exhibition of Russian and Indian photographers “Russia and India in Photographs” was opened at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Mumbai on August 19, 2019 celebrating the World Photography Day.

The event was attended by the Consul of the Consulate General of Russia in Mumbai, Khristina Boyko, the leaders of the Associations of Photographers of the states of Maharashtra and Telangan, photographers, as well as numerous guests.

In his welcoming speech, the director of the RCSC Mumbai Sergey Fandeev focused on the history of the holiday, which has been celebrated around the world since 2009. The date of August 19 was not chosen by chance, because it was on this day in 1839 that the prototype of a photograph, the so-called photo-deerrotype, was presented to the general public.

Following the results of the exhibition “Russia and India in Photographs”, the authors of the three best works will be awarded diplomas of honor.

As part of the event, photography masters were also invited to participate in the Russian Civilization International Photo Contest, which is annually held by the Federal Agency for Nationalities of Russia with the support of Rossotrudnichestvo.

A similar multimedia contest is held annually by the Presidential Library. “Foreign View” is one of the institution’s creative projects aimed at creating and preserving the photographic heritage. The contest accepts photographs from abroad made by Russians and photographs of Russia made by foreigners. The best works are included in the photo album, which, along with the best videos, enters the electronic collections of the Presidential Library. The album is available in remote electronic reading rooms located in different countries of the world. At the moment, the possibility of expanding the presence of the Presidential Library in Asia and opening remote access centers in India, in particular on the basis of the RCSC in Mumbai, is being considered.
