Trams and trolleybuses in the city on the Neva: the Presidential Library honored the winners of the Children's Drawing Contest

30 August 2019

Elephants on tram rails and women in outlandish costumes on the streets of St. Petersburg became the main characters in the drawings of the participants of the VI Trams and Trolleybuses in the City on the Neva Contest. The results of the creative contest were traditionally summed up on the eve of the new academic year, on August 29, 2019, at the official award ceremony at the Museum of Urban Electric Transport with the participation of the Presidential Library.

Valentin Sidorin, Deputy Director General of the Presidential Library, noted that close cooperation was developing between the two institutions. There is also a historical connection between them, since the route of the first tram ran from the territory that the Museum of Urban Electric Transport houses today to a stop near St. Isaac's and Senate Square, where the Presidential Library is located.

The children's drawings Trams and Trolleybuses in the City on the Neva Contest is held for the sixth time. In 2019, the theme was “Walking with an “Elephant” (Slon) and “Amerikanka”: the children were offered to study the nicknames of trams and trolleybuses. The fact is that this year marks two significant dates at once: 70 years have passed since the LM-49 model entered the tram-giant line and 40 years since the last LM-33 tram’s way. Leningraders called them "Elephant" (Slon) and "Amerikanka" respectively.

The Presidential Library awarded special prize for the work of 12-year-old Anastasia Kudinova "Tram for Two".

All winners of the VI contest received certificates for an individual tour to the Presidential Library, where today the largest cultural and educational center is housed, and their drawings will be showcased at a special multimedia exhibition of the Presidential Library and will enter its electronic collections.

The VI Trams and Trolleybuses in the City on the Neva Children’s Drawing Contest 2019 started on June 1, Children's Day. In total, about 200 works were presented, the best of them will be screened at the city electric transport.

The Presidential Library has been a partner of the Trams and Trolleybuses in the City on the Neva Annual Contest since 2017, when a cooperation agreement was signed with St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise Gorelectrotrans. During this time, a number of interesting joint projects were implemented: a press tour to the Museum of Urban Electric Transport, the video lecture “Tram - Transport of the Future” and “The Siege Tram: Struggling for the Life of Leningrad”, thematic video content of the Presidential Library is regularly screened on monitors of city trolleybuses and trams. In addition, as part of the interaction, the organizations exchanged unique materials: the Presidential Library donated historical documents from its collection for the Museum of Urban Electric Transport, the Museum was entered with rare editions.

The Presidential Library’s portal features "Petersburg Tram" collection. It includes plans, drawings, archival materials, newspaper articles covering the history of the development of tram traffic in St. Petersburg, the technical arrangement of wagons, parks and tracks, the functioning of the tram in besieged Leningrad; photographs depicting the expositions of the Museum of Urban Electric Transport are also presented.
