15 November 2019

A poetry event was held at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Kuala Lumpur, dedicated to the 205th birthday of the great Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov.

The event was attended by specialists of Russian institutions abroad, Russian compatriots living in Malaysia, students studying Russian in the RCSC as a foreign language, as well as representatives of the Malaysian and foreign public. The guests of honor of the event were the outstanding Russian sculptor, President of the International Academy of Kindness Grigory Pototsky, as well as translator Viktor Pogadaev - a well-known orientalist, specialist in Southeast Asia.

The evening began with a short documentary about the life and career of the poet. Then Grigory Pototsky - the sculptor of the monument to Lermontov, unveiled at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in 2014, delivered his speech. He spoke about the history of the creation of the poet’s bust, about the meaning of his name and personality, and then invited the guests to honor the memory of Mikhail Lermontov and lay flowers.

Then the poetic part of the evening began. Children from the school at the Russian Embassy in Malaysia and students studying Russian at the RCSC read their favorite Lermontov poems in Russian. Invited foreign guests recited poetry of the great poet in English, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and other languages. French activist Loic Martino prepared and read two poems that Lermontov wrote in French. That evening, one of the most famous poems “The Sail” (Parus) was performed in 7 languages, including Malay by the translator of this work Viktor Pogadayev.

Since 2018, a center of remote access to the information resources of the Presidential Library has been opened at the RCSC in Kuala Lumpur. Everyone is available the electronic collection Mikhail Lermontov (1814–1841), which contains documents that spotlight the versatility of the personality of the brilliant poet and his role in the cultural life of Russia.
