Young readers of Penza learned more about the Order of St. George

6 December 2019

At the end of November 2019, specialists of the Penza Regional Center of Access to the Resources of the Presidential Library held an event called “The Cross of Russian Courage”, dedicated to the Order of St. George, which will celebrate its 250th anniversary this year for schoolchildren of school № 36.

During the game, schoolchildren learned about the history of the establishment of the Order of St. George, and also got familiar with books dedicated to the Knights of St. George.

Teenagers became participants in a kind of quest, the purpose of which was to search for parts of the order. Before the start of the game, the guys were divided into two groups - “Suvorovets” and “Nakhimovets”.

“Suvorovets” studied digitized sources from the Presidential Library. Thus, in the book of V. V. Quadri “Russian Imperial and Tsarist Orders” of 1901, schoolchildren learned that the Order of St. George was given “as a reward for jealousy and zeal and to encourage further exploits in military art”.

“Nakhimovets” assembled the Sinop battle puzzle, which was encrypted using the semaphore alphabet and Morse code.

The Presidential Library’s portal features Penza Region: Pages of History collection. It includes archival documents, essays, studies and statistical materials which spotlight the demographic, geographical, socio-economic, socio-political and other aspects of the history of the region from the end of the 18th to the first third of the 20th century. The current Charter of Penza Region is also provided.
