A tribute to Anatoly Kirpichnikov. Film "The Capital City" available on the Presidential Library’s portal

A famous Russian scientist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Slavic-Finnish Archeology of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anatoly Nikolaevich Kirpichnikov passed away on October 16, 2020.

On the day of farewell to Anatoly Nikolayevich, October 21, the Presidential Library's portal in Live broadcasts section at 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 19:00 and 21:00 will provide broadcasting of the documentary "The Capital City". The film shows archaeological excavations on the territory of Staraya Ladoga, carried out by employees of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences led by Kirpichnikov, which have opened new pages of Russian history. The film is based on A. N. Kirpichnikov's concept of Staraya Ladoga as “the ancient capital of Northern Russia”. Anatoly Nikolayevich came to the Presidential Library for the presentation of the film, spoke to an interested audience. Speaking about Staraya Ladoga, the scientist argued that “it is on this ancient land that we find the maximum possible harmony between the chronicle evidence and archeology”.

Anatoly Nikolaevich Kirpichnikov devoted his entire life to science, studying history, culture, military affairs, fortification and architecture of Russia and Staraya Ladoga, which allowed him to create more than 650 scientific works based on this richest material.

He was never an armchair scientist. An intelligent, comprehensively educated, open and energetic person - this is how many knew him.
