A cycle of lectures "Outstanding Historians of the XX century" launched at the Presidential Library

November 2, 2020, at 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library will host the first lecture from the cycle "Outstanding Historians of the XX century" as part of the Knowledge of Russia project. The subject of the event is “Alexander Alexandrovich Fursenko - Academician, Americanist, Person”.

Anyone can join the video lecture. The meeting will be held remotely and will be broadcasted live on the Presidential Library's portal in Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the institution's YouTube channel, as well as on the page on the VKontakte social network.

The lecture will be delivered by Sergei Isaev, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Acting Head of the Department of General History, Senior Research Fellow at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Church History at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy of the Russian Orthodox Church. He will tell about the scientific activities of the outstanding historian Alexander Fursenko (1927-2008), who was the first among Russian scientists of the post-war generation to lay the foundations for a serious academic study of the history of the United States of America. In addition, Sergei Isaev will share his personal experience of working with Alexander Fursenko, who at one time was his teacher and mentor.

Ivan Kurilla, Doctor of Historical Sciences, an expert in the history of Russian-American relations of the XIX century, will join the discussion of the report "Alexander Alexandrovich Fursenko - Academician, Americanist, Person". Students of the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University, teachers of St. Petersburg schools are also invited to the event.

One of the main areas of work of the Presidential Library is the digital preservation of the most important documents on the history, theory and practice of Russian statehood. The volume of the institution's electronic collections today is about a million depository items, including materials dedicated to various aspects of Russian-American relations. The Presidential Library’s portal features the collection "Russia - USA: the History of Relationship", which presents archival documents, research, reference and visual materials from the late 18th - mid-20th centuries.

The cycle of lectures "Outstanding Historians of the XX Century" is a long-term project of the Presidential Library dedicated to famous scientists who at various times were employees of the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and contributed to the development of Russian historical science. At subsequent meetings it is planned to consider the activities of Ruslan Skrynnikov, Valentin Dyakin, Viktor Paneyakh, Boris Ananich, Rafail Ganelin and others.
