The Presidential Library’s video lecture dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov

April 22, 2021, at 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library, as part of the Knowledge of Russia project, will host a video lecture dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the Chino del Duca International Prize, three times Hero of Socialist Labor, one of the creators of the first Soviet hydrogen bomb, physicist Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989). The event is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the scientist, which will be celebrated on May 21, 2021.

Marina Sakharova-Lieberman, the granddaughter of Andrei Sakharov, has been invited to participate in the video lecture.

The event is free. The meeting will be held remotely and will be broadcasted live on the Presidential Library's portal in the Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the institution's YouTube channel and the VKontakte social network.

Professor of the South Ural State University Yekaterina Prilukova will dwell on the life and work of Andrei Sakharov. Thus, the participants of the video lecture will learn in what environment the future scientist grew up, how he began his physics experiments at home, how he became one of the creators of the hydrogen bomb and why he believed that this weapon should never be used.

The archives and memorial apartment of Academician A. D. Sakharov, which are located in Moscow in the house where the physicist has lived since 1971, will be discussed by Natalia Samover, the coordinator of the exhibition activities of the Sakharov Center. She will tell about significant events in the life of the scientist which were associated with this place and how his heritage is now preserved and studied there.

The participants of the video lecture will learn about the relevance of Andrei Sakharov's views in the 21st century from the speech of Maria Demina, a specialist in exposition and exhibition activities of the A. D. Sakharov Museum in Nizhny Novgorod. She will tell about options for solving global problems the scientist proposed in his social and political works and why he considered it necessary to rely on the principles of protecting the rights of the individual, peaceful coexistence and recognizing the importance of technological progress in rethinking the path of development of the information society.

Entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: for media representatives - through entrance № 2, participants and guests of the event - through entrance № 1.
