
The Presidential Library’s video lecture marking Alexander Nevsky’s 800th anniversary
April 29, 2021 the Presidential Library, as part of the Knowledge of Russia project, hosted a video lecture entitled "Alexander Nevsky’s Historical Memory", timed to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Faithful Saint Prince. His anniversary will be celebrated on May 13, 2021. The event spotlighted the personality of Alexander Nevsky and the peculiarities of the historical era he lived.
The video lecture was free. The multimedia lesson was broadcasted live on the Presidential Library's portal in the Live broadcasts section, in the Presidential Library's cinema club group on the VKontakte social network and on the institution's YouTube channel.
Director of the private cultural institution “Museum of the Battle of the Ice. Samolva” Vladimir Potresov told about the history of one of the most important battles that took place on April 5, 1242 and made Alexander Nevsky famous. In addition, the participants in the video lecture learned about the expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which, in order to clarify the place of the legendary battle, was held on Lake Peipsi in the late 50s - early 60s of the XX century, as well as about the activities of Vladimir Potresov and his colleagues in the disclosure of "white spots" in the history of the battle.
Deputy Director of the “Museum of the Battle of the Ice. Samolva” Tatyana Namestnikova told about the work being done today to preserve the historical memory of Alexander Nevsky and his exploits.
The building of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg houses a temple in honor of the Faithful Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky. The participants of the video lecture learned about the history of this place and the uniqueness of the church, which contained a particle of the relics of the great commander, from the speech of Larisa Yurevichiene, an employee of the department for the canonization of saints and the study of the history of the Tikhvin diocese.
Roman Sokolov, director of the Institute of History and Social Sciences of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, shared little-known facts about the creation of Sergei Eisenstein's film "Alexander Nevsky". The historical feature film, released in 1938 and telling about the struggle of the Russian people led by Alexander Nevsky against the Teutonic Order, is considered one of the masterpieces of Soviet cinema. The participants of the video lecture learned about the features of the film, about the truth and fiction in its plot.
The event was attended by representatives of the St. Petersburg charitable public organization "Pilgrim" Irina Yakusheva and Maria Belskaya, who told about the festival "Living Memory. Alexander Nevsky" held in 2020. Due to a literary contest the participants were invited to write a letter to Alexander Nevsky. The best addresses to the Faithful Saint Prince were read out at a video lecture by the winners of the contest – the pupils of St. Petersburg schools.
Alexander Nevsky is illustrated in the Presidential Library’s materials. The electronic collection Alexander Nevsky (1221-1263) is dedicated to the famous commander. It includes such rare editions as Saint Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky (1899) by the writer, Archpriest Mikhail Khitrov, Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, Grand Prince of Vladimir and All Russia (1871) by historian Mikhail Khmyrov, Saint Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky (1898) by the priest Nikolai Voskresensky, Life and exploits of the Faithful Saint Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky (1864) and others.
