The premiere of the musical "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" held at the Russian House in Tanzania
The Russian House in Dar es Salaam hosted the premiere of the musical The Tale of Tsar Saltan. To stage the play in Swahili, the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Tanzania invited a theatrical troupe led by the famous director Mgunga mwa Nyenyelwa in the country. Earlier, he staged at the Russian Center of Science and Culture a musical performance based on Pushkin's The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish, which was shown on national state television, and participated in festivals.
The secret of the production's success is simple: without deviating from Pushkin's texts, the artists were able to make the drama and morality of Russian fairy tales understandable to the Tanzanian audience of any age. National songs and dances organically included in the stage action turned them into colorful and mesmerizing musical performances.
Pushkin's fairy tales in Swahili were published by the Rossotrudnichestvo office twenty years ago. The author of the translation is the well-known writer Joshua Madumulla in the country. In collaboration with the RCSC, he also performed translations of the comedy The Inspector General by Nikolai Gogol and the story White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Translations of works by Russian classics have become a new word in Russian African studies. According to the leadership of the National Council of Tanzania for the Development of Swahili, they also made a significant contribution to the development of the language and culture of this African country.
