Penza hosted the First All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference "Kalachov Readings"

On November 2, 2021, the Mikhail Lermontov Penza Regional Library hosted the First All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference "Kalachov Readings". The online event was devoted to the memory of Nikolai Kalachov (1819-1885), the outstanding Russian specialist in the study of early texts, archivist and historian.

The conference organizers were the government of Penza Region, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Penza Region, the Mikhail Lermontov Penza Regional Library, the Presidential Library, Penza State University and the Regional Public Local History Organization of Penza Region.

The event aimed to draw the attention of the public and state authorities to the scientific heritage of Nikolai Kalachov, topical issues and scientific problems of the study of early texts, archival activity, Russian history and law. It also strived to expand the interregional horizons of scientific cooperation.

The conference involved representatives of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Ryazan, Vladimir and Tambov.

Oleg Yagov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Penza Region; Yulia Lazutkina, Senator of the Federation Council of Russia, representative of the Legislative Assembly of Penza Region of the sixth convocation; Vladimir Pervushkin, Vice-Rector for Research of the Institute of Regional Development of Penza Region, Chairman of the Regional Public Local History Organization of Penza Region made their congratulations.

The conference reports highlighted Kalachov’s work in the Tver Scientific Archival Commission, the State Archives of Saratov Region, and the Serdobsk District Court. Also, there were the memories of Kalachov written by Ryazan local historian Stepan Yakhontov (1853–1942).

Dmitry Murashov, an Academic Secretary of the Mikhail Lermontov Penza Regional Library, told about his new book about Kalachov.

The Presidential Library's portal provides the collection Penza Region: Pages of History. It features archival files, essays, studies and statistical materials covering various aspects of the regional history of the late XVIII - early XX centuries, including demographic, geographical, socio-economic, socio-political information.
