The Presidential Library presented a new book by Sergey Shakhrai about the history of modern Russia
On January 27 2022 the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library hosted a presentation of a new book by Sergey Shakhrai “How I Wrote the Constitution of the Yeltsin and Putin Era”.
This bright and unusual book opens a series of memoirs "90s: Personalities in History", the authors of which are iconic figures of the "hottest" period in the history of modern Russia.
Sergey Shakhrai, who by the will of fate came into politics in the late 1980s and early 1990s, faced a choice - to become an outside observer or to start acting in conditions of an acute political and economic crisis and uncertainty, taking responsibility for difficult decisions and a new country.
The author, honestly and without embellishment assessing his political biography, recalls not only the nineties - the time of his political rise, but also many events that happened before and after this turning point in Russian history. The book not only gives the reader a whole arsenal of professionally verified historical facts and details - it is full of exciting drama, human passions and bright characters. Boris Yeltsin, Anatoly Sobchak, Sergey Alekseev, Viktor Chernomyrdin, Yevgeny Primakov, Mikhail Mishustin, Jacques Chirac, Prince Charles and many other historical figures appear on the pages of Shakhrai's memoirs not as characters in ceremonial portraits, but as living people with their own strengths and weaknesses.
The events of the 90s are the most difficult and controversial period in the history of Russia, which is still represented in black and white. The author, who set himself the task of showing the “era of change” as a living multi-colored reality, hopes very much for an interested reader and will be ready to answer any questions in a lively discussion.
The event is available on the institution's YouTube channel.
