1 February 2022

Employees of the Lermontov Penza Regional Library held a practice-oriented lesson for schoolchildren dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Speransky.

Scientific Secretary of the Lermontov Library Dmitry Yuryevich Murashov told the participants of the event about Speransky's significant contribution to the reform of the state-legal system of the Russian Empire and also told many interesting facts about the outstanding statesman. Thus, during a trip to Europe of Alexander I and a meeting with Napoleon, both emperors tried to show off their retinue. Napoleon took with him to the meeting the German kings and princes who were completely dependent on him and Alexander I took Speransky. After this meeting, Napoleon offered the Russian monarch to exchange Mikhail Mikhailovich for some kingdom.

Contemporaries called Mikhail Speransky one of the most advanced people of his time, not only in Russia, but also in Europe.

Schoolchildren also learned about the Presidential Library’s portal. The section "States and political figures of the XVIII - early XX centuries" provides the collection Mikhail Speransky (1772–1839), which includes studies about the life and career of Mikhail Mikhailovich, memoirs about him, published works and correspondence, as well as visual materials.

The collection Penza Region: Pages of History is of interest on the Presidential Library’s portal. It includes archival documents, essays, studies and statistical materials covering the demographic, geographical, socio-economic, socio-political and other aspects of the history of the region at the end of the 18th - the first third of the 20th century. The current Charter of Penza Region is also available.
