The history and present time of the indigenous peoples of the North considered at the Presidential Library

On February 25, 2022 the Presidential Library hosted a video lecture entitled “Indigenous Peoples of the North: History and Present Time” as part of the Knowledge of Russia project. The event became a part of the program of the traditional annual conference "Arctic Day at the Presidential Library".

Vera Cheboksarova, representative of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Paleo-Asiatic Languages, Folklore and Literature, Institute of the Peoples of the North, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in her speech “Yukaghirs: archetypal symbols of the culture of the most ancient people of the Arctic” characterized the symbolic system of worldviews and the mythological model of the world of the Yukaghirs, and also presented the most ancient archaic plots, images and characters in the Yukaghir folklore.

Head of the Department of Ethnography of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Ethnographic Museum Valentina Gorbacheva talked about the culture of the Arctic peoples of Russia presented in the exhibition projects of the museum. The video lecture participants learned about the thematic mini-exhibitions at the REM and the Branch of the Museum of the World Ocean in St. Petersburg - "Icebreaker" Krassin", and about the upcoming exposition "Peoples of the Far North, Siberia and the Far East", which included materials on the culture of the Arctic peoples of Siberian Region.

Lecture by the employees of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Goncharov and Vasilisa Bobrova "Food security in Arctic Region of Yakutia and Taimyr" was devoted to the practices of creating and maintaining food security in the region of Northern Yakutia and on the Taimyr Peninsula. The audience got answers to questions about how the inhabitants of the Arctic managed to provide themselves with the necessary food, what the “Arctic diet” means and what options for the development of the gastronomic sector in the Far North are.
