The history of one of the oldest literary journals in Russia exhibited at the Presidential Library

15 April 2022

From April 14 to May 14, 2022 the multimedia exhibition “The Age of the “Siberian Lights”” (“Sibirskiye Ogni”) is available on Senate Square, 3 marking the 100th anniversary of one of the oldest literary periodicals in Russia.

The exhibition dedicated to the history and present day of the journal has been prepared by the specialists of the Novosibirsk Regional Center of the Presidential Library based on the Novosibirsk State Regional Scientific Library together with the editors of “Siberian Lights”.

The history of the journal clearly and vividly spotlights the development of Russian and, in particular, Siberian literature from the early 20s of the last century to the present day. The exposition presented on plasma panels features a historical retrospective of the publication, references to works published on the pages of the magazine, as well as rare archival materials.

Throughout its existence, the journal "Siberian Lights" has played an important role in the literary life of Siberia. It published hundreds of works by authors who received universal recognition. Many of them were included in the golden collections of Russian literature: Vasily Shukshin's novels "Lyubavini" and "I came to give you freedom", Vyacheslav Shishkov's epic "Gloomy River", Anatoly Ivanov's epic paintings "Eternal Call" and "Shadows Disappear at Noon", stories by Viktor Astafiev "Theft", Valentin Rasputin "Money for Mary", etc.

Writers whose works are published on the pages of “Siberian Lights” today become laureates of prestigious literary competitions and awards, such as the Russian Booker, the Rasputin National Literary Prize, Shukshin Literary Prize, International Voloshin Prize.

"Siberian Lights" has also always actively contributed to the development of culture and literature of the small peoples of Siberia. The journal published translations of the folklore of the Altaians, Shors as well as peoples of the Far North. The tradition of publishing samples of national folklore on the pages of the publication has been preserved to this day.

Each issue of the oldest literary journal in Russia is digitized and placed in the electronic collections of the Presidential Library. The institution’s portal features works published on the pages of “Siberian Lights” spotlighting a clear and vivid picture of the age-old life of Siberian literature starting from the very first issue, published in March 1922.
