Traveling around Russia with the Presidential Library

16 September 2022

Eight Russian cities at once – anniversary celebrants of 2022 - are exhibited at Senate Square, 3, as part of the new project "Discovering Russia with the Presidential Library".

The goal of the project, which will become an annual event, is to show the original character of individual Russian cities and regions, to show their history and sights.

This year the heroes of the project are Moscow (875 years), Murom (1160 years), Kursk (990 years), Totma (885 years), Vologda (875 years), Veliky Ustyug (875 years), Kostroma (870 years) and Sergiev-Posad (685 years).

The exhibition halls present the most valuable materials from the Presidential Library’s collections: old maps and plans, documentary evidence of famous natives, places and events - everything that will allow learning about this or that city better.

Part of the exhibition tells about the formation and development of Moscow. The centerpiece is one of the most beautiful and rare visual publications about the capital - a panorama of the city center, published in the middle of the 19th century. It consists of 10 lithographic sheets, painted with watercolors, and is 4.5 m long.

Documents and rare visual materials introduce interesting facts about the cities of the Russian North. For example, at the end of the 17th century, on Lake Kubenskoye near Vologda, Peter I tested the first ships of the Russian fleet. Totma and Veliky Ustyug are the birthplace of Russian navigators and explorers. Among the prominent natives of Veliky Ustyug are Semyon Dezhnev, the first navigator to cross the Bering Strait, and Mikhail Buldakov, a traveler and the first director of the Russian-American Company. Totma is the birthplace of Ivan Kuskov, the founder of the Russian colony in America and the first commandant of Fort Ross in California. The exposition showcases photographs of monuments to these Russian sailors and archive documents spotlighting the history of the development of Russian Far East and the territories of North America.

Murom is not only famous for its temples and monasteries, but also known for its famous natives - Saints Peter and Fevronia, as well as the hero of the Russian epic Ilya Muromets. The epic hero is described in the collections of ancient Russian legends exhibited at the Presidential Library.

Ancient plans and archive documents spotlight the main symbols of Kursk in the 18th-19th centuries - the Root Hermitage and the miraculous Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign. Visitors to the exhibition will also learn a lot of interesting things about famous Kursk people - the 19th century self-taught astronomer Fyodor Semyonov and the 20th century artist Alexander Deineka.

The exhibition features rare books of the 19th century dedicated to Kostroma and images of the Ipatiev Monastery, where Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov was called to the throne in 1613, as well as monuments of Kostroma, captured in the photographs of the pioneer of color photography, Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, taken at the beginning of the 20th century.

The exposition will show visitors the history of Sergiev Posad and the famous Trinity-Sergius Lavra, founded by Sergius of Radonezh in the 14th century.

The exhibition "Discovering Russia with the Presidential Library" will be open from September 6 to October 30, 2022. The exposition is available for visiting to readers of the Presidential Library, as well as to everyone within the framework of excursions.
