On October 19, 2022, the Regional Center of the Presidential Library based on the Belinsky Sverdlovsk Regional Universal Scientific Library hosted the first lecture from the series “Historical Environment” - “Medieval Russia. Barbarism or Civilization”.

The lecturer was Alexander Kapustin, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Honorary Archivist of the Russian Federation and Mongolian People's Republic, Head of the Archives Department of Sverdlovsk Region from 1990 to 2021.

Based on archival documents, the lecturer spoke about the fact that for hundreds of years, through the efforts of Western diplomats and writers, the myth of the barbarism of the Russian people, its irresistible backwardness, downtroddenness and slavery has been introduced into the public consciousness of people. Together with the lecturer, the audience compared the life and way of life, as well as the level of education and culture of the peoples of medieval Russia and the peoples of France, Germany and England.

According to organizers, the Historical Wednesday lecture hall will be held every third Wednesday of the month. The meetings will focus on key events that took place in different historical periods in Russia.

The Presidential Library’s portal features the collection Sverdlovsk Region: Pages of History. It includes statistical materials, studies, essays and photographs of the 19th - early 20th centuries covering various aspects of the development of the region.
