Penza schoolchildren learned about the emergence of writing and typography

28 October 2022

Employees of the Lermontov Penza Regional Library prepared an entertaining event for first grade students of Lyceum No. 73. The children were told about the way the writing arose and the way the printing invented.

Digitized materials from the Presidential Library’s collections were presented at the lesson. The children were shown the textbooks used by schoolchildren in the old days. According to the organizers, the illustrated edition of Karion Istomin's Primer (1694), available on the Presidential Library’s portal, aroused particular interest among the young guests.

As part of the event, schoolchildren learned about how Johannes Gutenberg's printing press existed and who created the first printing house in Russia. Young visitors tried themselves as scriptorium masters by drawing a letter for a handwritten book. At the lesson, the pupils were shown images of ancient rock paintings. The children also tried to make cuneiform clay tablets with their own hands.

The Presidential Library’s portal features the collection Penza Region: Pages of History. It includes archival documents, essays, studies, statistical and other materials that spotlight various aspects of the development of the region in different historical periods.
