20 February 2023

On February 20, 2023 the Presidential Library hosted the IV All-Russian ethno-dictation in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation with international participation.

The educational campaign is held within the framework of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Languages and is an official event of UNESCO. It is also dedicated to the International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated annually on February 21.

Ethno-dictation is carried out in two stages. The correspondence stage takes place from February 14 to February 21, 2023 in the regions of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, near and far abroad, including using online technologies. According to the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, more than 1,500 participants in ethno-dictation are registered all over the world.

Students of educational institutions of St. Petersburg, as well as those who were interested in the languages and culture of the indigenous peoples of Russia, attended the on-site stage of the ethno-dictation at the Presidential Library.

The theme of the ethnographic dictation in 2023 is “Folklore heroes of my people”. It was not chosen by chance: it is in folklore texts that the history, cultural traditions associated with customs, lifestyle and worldview are clearly spotlighted. This will allow the participants of the ethno-dictation to touch the deep folk wisdom.

The face-to-face event was held simultaneously in 15 languages: Even, Koryak, Mansi, Evenki, Nivkh, Sami, Nenets (Tundra dialect), Khanty (Kazym dialect), Chukchi, Telengit, Yukagir, Dolgan, Eskimo, Nanai, Veps. In 24 languages of the small peoples of Russia, the ethno-dictation will be written in correspondence format.

The texts of dictations were read by representatives of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, members of the St. Petersburg branch of the Association, employees of the Institute of the Peoples of the North of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St. Petersburg branch of the Prosveshchenie Publishing House as well as the Leningrad regional public organization Veps community.
