What do we know about how we speak? The Presidential Library told about the modern spoken language

18 April 2023

On April 18, 2023 the Presidential Library hosted a video lecture "Modern Spoken Language, or What We Know About How We Speak". 2023 has been declared the Year of the Russian language as the language of interethnic communication in the CIS space. In this regard, the Presidential Library hosted a series of lectures on topical issues of Russian studies and the problems of the development of the Russian language in the world.

What are the features of the spoken Russian language? Do real spoken language and our understanding of it differ? Natalya Bogdanova-Beglaryan, Professor of the Russian Language Department of St. Petersburg State University, Doctor of Philology, addressed the Presidential Library’s attendees.

The meeting was focused on the obvious gap that exists between spoken language and our understanding of how we speak. This representation is most often based on school education, as well as dictionaries and reference books that capture the features of the language, and often does not reflect the actual manifestation of oral speech. The lecture used speech material that helped each participant hear himself first of all.

The event is available on the institution’s Rutube-channel.

The final video lecture series from a series of lectures on topical issues of Russian studies and the problems of the development of the Russian language in the world will be held on April 24 at 13:00. The topic of the video lecture is “Rhetorical devices in political discourse”. Lecturer - Irina Mitrofanova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of the Russian Language, St. Petersburg State University.

The announcement of the video lecture will be available in the Announcements section on the library's portal.
