26 April 2023

Richly illustrated coronation albums of Russian emperors with drawings and engravings by famous artists, charters granted by monarchs to their subjects, books from the personal libraries of members of the House of Romanov and other interesting materials are exhibited at the Presidential Library.

The exposition “Highlights of the collection of the Presidential Library “The House of Romanov. The Zemsky Sobor of 1613””, marking the year of the 410th anniversary of the election to the Russian throne of Mikhail Romanov, was based on the documents from a major electronic collection dedicated to the royal dynasty, as well as original publications of the 18th–20th centuries from the collection of rare books, which is stored in the Presidential Library .

Visitors to the exhibition will see such rare publications as a ceremonial album published in 1744 on the occasion of the accession to the throne of the Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, “Types of the most interesting coronation ceremonies of their Imperial Majesties Emperor Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra” (1828), “The Coronation Collection of Tsar Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna" (1889). These limited edition editions provide detailed descriptions of the coronation ceremonies, accompanied by drawings and engravings.

Part of the exhibition will allow guests of the Presidential Library to learn about numerous members of the imperial family, find out what they read and what they were fond of - books from the personal collections of the Romanovs occupy a special place in the exhibition. These are editions with bookplates of monarchs and grand dukes. (Ex-libris (from lat. exlibris) - a book sign that certifies the owner of the book, is pasted or stamped on the flyleaf).

Bookplates of the royal and grand-ducal libraries are the most valuable monuments of national history and culture. Monograms, ciphers, initials under the imperial or grand ducal crown were created by the best artists, engravers and printers.

The exposition features publications from the book collections of Alexander II, Nicholas II, the wife of Paul I Maria Feodorovna, Grand Dukes Sergei Alexandrovich, Nikolai Nikolaevich, Konstantin Konstantinovich (widely known in the 19th century under the poetic pseudonym K.R.), Prince Alexander of Oldenburg and other representatives of the House of Romanov.
