The Presidential Library’s video lecture portrayed the last Russian emperor

11 May 2023

On May 11, 2023 the Presidential Library hosted a video lecture Nicholas II: Triumph and Tragedy of Russia dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the birth of the last Russian Emperor as part of the Knowledge of Russia project.

The name of Nicholas II (1868-1918) is associated with the most difficult period in the history of the Russian state. Born on the day of the memory of Job the Long-suffering, Nicholas seemed to be doomed to a tragic fate from the very beginning. Was it possible to avoid a fatal fate? Igor Lukoyanov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Leading Researcher at the Department of Modern Russian History and Deputy Director for Research at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shared his thoughts about this.

Sergey Lebedev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of New History of Russia at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told about the complexity of choosing the further path of development of the state, aimed either at industrialization or agriculture, about the indecision of the emperor.

The event is available on the institution’s Rutube-channel.

Cooperation between the Presidential Library and the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been actively developing. The first joint series of lectures, dedicated to the territories of Russia as part of the Russian Empire, was held in 2019. Video recordings of experts' speeches are available on the Presidential Library’s portal.
