The Presidential Library hosted the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference of Geneticists

20 May 2023

Risk determination of especially dangerous blood diseases and modern methods of cancer treatment was discussed by the participants of the VII All-Russian scientific and practical conference with international participation "Genetics of tumors of the hematopoietic system - from diagnosis to therapy". The conference was held in St. Petersburg at the Presidential Library on May 19–20, 2023.

Specialists - genetics, hematologists, oncologists - today are able to determine the risk of blood cancer with a high degree of probability, make a diagnosis in a timely manner and effectively treat the disease. It should be noted that genetics in Russia has been actively used for diagnosing and treating patients with blood diseases since the early 2000s. Since then, the survival rate of cancer patients has increased from an average of 30% to 90%. Meanwhile, about 30,000 people fall ill with leukemia every year in Russia.

In order to exchange experience and discuss how to effectively diagnose and treat blood diseases in modern conditions, experts from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan attended the Presidential Library. Another geneticists and hematologists joined the conference online.

Doctors and scientists have learned to save the lives of cancer patients through DNA research which did not exist in the recent past. New technologies are personalized treatment methods and the use of targeted drugs that work more accurately and more efficiently than previous generation drugs and also have fewer significant side effects.

At the same time, the changed geopolitical situation cannot but affect the work of the medical community. The departure of a number of suppliers of equipment and consumables used by the genetic laboratories of our country poses new urgent challenges. The topics of the upcoming conference are the methods of genetic diagnosis of tumors of the hematopoietic system that have changed and the way out of the situation that has been found.

The following international experts made keynote presentations at the forum:

Irina Martynkevich, Head of the Research Center for Cellular and Molecular Pathology of the RNIIGT, Doctor of Biological Sciences;

Sergei Sidorkevich, Director of the RosNIIGT FMBA of Russia, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor;

Sergei Kutsev, Director of the "Medical Genetic Research Center", Chief Freelance Specialist in Medical Genetics of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences;

Andrei Sudarikov, Head of the Department of Molecular Genetics, National Medical Research Center for Hematology, Doctor of Medical Sciences;

Irina Pivovarova, Director of Hematology Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Kazakhstan;

Elmira Boychenko, Chief Freelance Pediatric Hematologist, Head of the Department of Oncohematology, St. Petersburg "Children's City Diversified Clinical Specialized Center for High Medical Technologies", Doctor of Medical Sciences;

Galina Salogub, Director of the Institute of Oncology and Hematology of the Almazov National Medical Research Center, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

The expected result of the St. Petersburg forum is a new step in the genetic diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors of hematopoietic, lymphoid and related tissues, in the preparation of clinical guidelines for the treatment of hemoblastoses, blood diseases and the possibilities of their prevention.

The conference included the exhibition of promising developments, equipment, technologies that are consumables for genetic research.
