The Presidential Library marking the birthday of Leningrad Region

August 1, 2023 marks the 96th anniversary of the foundation of Leningrad Region. This year, the celebration of the region's birthday will be held on August 5 in Tosno. Leningrad Region celebrates its holiday every year in different cities. The authorities decided not to cancel the tradition even after the appearance of the official capital of the 47th region - Gatchina.

Making the Year of the Knowledge Team in the 47th region, which coincides with the Year of Teachers and Mentors announced in Russia, events in Tosno will be united by the theme of knowledge and education.

The Presidential Library’s collections illustrate photographs and postcards telling about the history and sights of Tosno.

Picturesque places near Tosno - the Tosna and Sablinka Rivers, the region's largest waterfalls and caves with underground labyrinths and lakes - have always attracted the attention of travelers. Estates and country houses of wealthy Petersburgers have long been built here. So, in the village of Pustynka (Sablino village) on the right bank of the Tosna River, there was a manor that belonged to A. K. Tolstoy. The owners of the Maryino estate, where the architectural appearance of the noble estate of the 18th-19th centuries is now recreated, were the Stroganovs-Golitsyns, and in Lisino-Korpus, in the estate built according to the project of Nikolai Benois, Emperor Alexander II stopped when he went hunting. The names of N. G. Chernyshevsky, artists V. V. Mate, A. P. Bogolyubov, A. P. Ryabushkin and many other famous Russians are associated with Lyuban. Here, in Lyuban, the only Russian railway church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was restored. A favorite place for tourists is the old Russian village of Shapki. There are mentions of Tosno and Lyuban in the most famous work of the writer A. N. Radishchev “Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow”.

Today, the Tosno district is one of the leading regions in Leningrad Region. It is distinguished by its leading position in a number of economic and social positions in the region, the richness of cultural traditions.

The Presidential Library closely cooperates with Leningrad Region. The cooperation agreement was concluded back in 2014. To date, remote reading rooms of the library are opened in the Archival Administration of Leningrad Region, in the Leningrad Regional Universal Scientific Library. Another 29 remote access centers to the Presidential Library’s resources have been opened in the municipal districts of the region: Boksitogorsky, Volkhovsky, Vyborgsky, Gatchinsky, Kirishsky, Kirovsky, Lodeynopolsky, Lomonosovsky, Luga, Priozersky, Slantsevsky, Tikhvinsky and Tosnensky. It is worth noting that three remote access centers to the resources of the Presidential Library are available in Tosno based on the municipal state cultural institution "Tosno inter-settlement centralized library system", as well as in gymnasium № 2 and secondary school № 1.
