1 November 2023

On November 1, 2023 a lecture dedicated to corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Sergei Ivanovich Arkhangelsky (1882–1958) was held in the Presidential Library as part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Culture and Psychology of Entrepreneurship at the Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship of Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University Andrei Kuznetsov told how historian Sergei Arkhangelsky combined academic career with extensive teaching activities.

The largest Russian scientist of the 20th century, Arkhangelsky, came to big science when he was already over forty years old. Studying the history of revolutionary England, he became a world-famous specialist. His book about the local method in historical science is still a reference book for local historians in Russia. He thought of himself as part of a large English-study movement in Russian historical science and as a successor to the great historians of Nizhny Novgorod origin - K. N. Bestuzhev-Ryumin and S. V. Eshevsky.

The event was attended by Sergei Arkhangelsky’s last student, Candidate of Historical Sciences, author of the article “Scientific Heritage of Sergei Arkhangelsky and Modern Historical Thought” Ida Ketkova, who shared her personal memories of him as a mentor.

The Presidential Library’s collections contain scientist’s research.

The video lecture is available on the Presidential Library’s s Rutube-channel.
