The Presidential Library’s video lecture portrayed Russian icon painter Andrei Rublev

2 November 2023

On November 2, 2023 a lecture dedicated to the icon painter Andrei Rublev was held in the Presidential Library as part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Oleg Ulyanov gave a lecture “Andrei Rublev and his “Trinity”: speculation in colors”.

There is no more famous or less famous personality in the history of the Russian state than the Reverend Andrei Rublev. Today his works are accepted as the standard of ancient Russian art. In ancient manuscripts he is called an ascetic and a seer of God “who surpasses all in wisdom”. For several centuries in a row, he has been steadily followed by the glory of the first icon painter in Rus', whose icons became famous as miraculous.

The chronicle information about the master that has reached us is full of gaps and contradictions: only in recent years, after much debate among historians, it has become possible to determine the exact date of death of the reverend monk of the Moscow Spaso-Andronikov Monastery Andrei Rublev, “who painted icons of saints in abundance”. The icon painter died on October 17 (October 30, new style) 1428. 2023 marks the 595th anniversary of the death of Andrei Rublev, not only a world-famous artist, but also an outstanding personality, the mystery of whose descendants have been trying to understand for so many years.

It is significant that his main creation, the miraculous icon of the Life-Giving Trinity, painted in praise of St. Sergius of Radonezh, was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 2023 by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

The video lecture is available on the Presidential Library's Rutube-channel.
