The Presidential Library's video lecture revealed the secrets of the history of engineering

13 March 2024

On March 13, 2024 the Presidential Library, as part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia, hosted a video lecture entitled “Rhythms of Everyday Life: Revealing the Secrets of the History of Engineering in the Southern Urals”.

Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of the Department of International Relations, Political Science and Regional Studies at South Ural State University Ekaterina Prilukova talked about the profession of an engineer.

In the world of high technology, there is a transformation of ideas about professions. They should be bright, with attractive names and, of course, bring material rewards. It is the profession of an engineer that gives a person the opportunity to fully realize his intellectual potential, to touch the world of science and modern knowledge.

It is generally accepted that an engineer’s field of activity is technical, but this is far from true. His activities are based on the life of society and with the person himself. Technology is only a tool in the hands of a professional. In other words, an engineer is a manifestation of thought, ingenuity and skill that are necessary for any society and person.

Engineering activity is the most important condition for the progress and development of society; it combines the production and intellectual experience of generations. The variety of engineering projects and their implementation require serious efforts from both society and individuals.

The development of engineering has accompanied humanity at all times - from the first primitive tools of labor and everyday life, allowing man to survive, to the most complex sociotechnical systems, limitlessly expanding his capabilities. The history of engineering becomes interesting, depending on the “intertwining” of many sociocultural factors, one of which is the territory of the region. For example, the Southern Urals is a land of beauty and richness not only of nature, but also of engineering. The chariot, found in the ancient metropolis of Arkaim in the Chelyabinsk region, is much older than its Roman counterparts and can become an example of the implementation of one of the first engineering projects.

The event is available on the Rutube-channel of the institution.
