On August 17, 2024, the Lermontov Penza Regional Library, which is the base for the Regional center of the Presidential Library, hosted schoolchildren from Zaporozhye region. The guests were given a guided tour of the library.

The event was part of the all-Russian project "University Shifts", which brings schoolchildren and students to different regions of Russia to learn about the country's history and culture and to get acquainted with higher education institutions.

Natalia Zakharova, a specialist from the Regional Center of the Presidential Library, and Lyudmila Lipilina, the chief librarian at the Regional Center for Rare Documents and Book Monuments, led the tour for the children.

The guests were told about the history of the Penza Regional Library. They were shown art and book exhibitions at the library's portal, and also were presented with materials from the library's rich collection and the Presidential Library's collections. They also learned about prominent figures connected with the history of Penza Region.

Schoolchildren were particularly interested in digitized handwritten books and illustrated editions from the 18th and 19th centuries, which they viewed in the Presidential Library's electronic reading room. They also saw a book by D. Evarnitsky titled Zaporozhye: Remnants of Antiquity and Traditions of the People (1888).

In addition, the children visited the various halls of the library and learned about the work of its different departments. For example, at the Regional Center for Rare Documents and Book Monuments, students with great interest studied ancient printed publications, a collection of miniature books, and other unusual formats of materials. In the book storage department, guests were informed about how books are kept dust-free and in which conditions they are stored. Students were also shown the telelift that delivers publications from the storage area to different floors of the library.

At the end of the event, high school students took a group photo to commemorate the occasion.

The Penza Region: Pages of History collection is available on the Presidential Library's portal. It includes archival documents, essays, research, statistics, and other materials that cover various aspects of the region's history over different time periods.
