Presidential Library participates in Annual Meeting of Heads of Libraries of Russia

12 November 2024

On November 12-13, 2024, the Presidential Library participates in the Annual Meeting of Heads of Federal and Central Regional Libraries of Russia.

The event is being organized by the Russian National Library in collaboration with the Russian State Library, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. This meeting brings together representatives from the Ministry of Culture, cultural management bodies from various regions of Russia, as well as federal and central regional library representatives from 75 different regions of the country.

The main topic of this year's meeting is Libraries and National Development Ideas. The following issues are discussed:
- The implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Librarianism in the Russian Federation until 2030, including the national project Kultura, which aims to create model libraries and digitalize book monuments.
- Libraries as centers of historical education and patriotic projects.
- Personnel support for the library industry, including research and methodological work.
- Content acquisition for library collections.
- Integration of libraries in new regions into Russia's cultural environment.

The Director General of the Presidential Library, Yuri Nosov, spoke at the plenary session on November 12 about the goals and future of the library's work in the field of history education. He emphasized that since the start of the working, the library has focused on educational and training projects that are implemented in collaboration with strategic partners.

One of the successful projects was the inclusion of internet links (QR-codes) to library information resources in unified history textbooks. According to these textbooks, high school students in 2023 began studying the history of Russia and world history. The links to the resources of the Presidential Library were directed to thematic collections with a total volume of more than 15,000 depository items.

This experience was continued in the preparation of unified history textbooks for grades 5-9 as well as regional history textbooks called The History of Our Region.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the Presidential Library has provided the Library of Digital Educational Content with more than three hundred carefully selected materials on the history of the two World Wars of the 20th century. These materials include archival documents, rare publications, postcards, photographs, pamphlets, and video lectures created by the Presidential Library's experts. Additionally, the information resources on national history and the Russian language provided by the Presidential Library are now available through the federal educational project Russian Electronic School.

Active cooperation with the educational community has allowed the library to launch another large-scale project – Presidential Library for Teachers: Teaching using Primary Sources. Teachers are offered methodical assistance in working with primary resources - lesson plans for humanities subjects. These are developed based on the library's informational resources. In addition, collections of the Presidential Library are presented, organized by academic subjects and according to curricula for grades 5-11. At the moment, it is possible to learn the lesson plans on the history of World War II, but next year, it is planned to expand the range of history topics and develop lesson plans for social studies.

Another significant project is the Future of the Fatherland contest for pedagogical projects, organized by the Presidential Library with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. This annual event takes place in seven categories related to humanitarian knowledge.

Starting this year, the winning projects will be published on the Presidential Library's online platform to promote and share pedagogical best practices.

Together with its permanent partner, the Gorchakov Lyceum of MGIMO, and the Presidential Library based on the collection World War II in Archival Documents, 28 video tutorials were prepared by leading Russian teachers dedicated to the events of 1933-1945.

The Russian Library annually hosts the Knowledge Forum and the Olympiad Russia in the Electronic World in history, social studies, Russian language, and Russian as a foreign language. Since 2023, the National Research University Higher School of Economics has become a co-organizer of the Olympiad.

The Presidential Library offers multimedia lessons, quizzes, video lectures, film clubs, and other events aimed at the historical education of younger generations and strengthening the cultural sovereignty of Russia.
