Penza schoolchildren learned folk traditions

23 January 2025

On January 21st and 22nd, 2025, experts from the Regional Center of the Presidential Library, based on the Lermontov Regional Library in Penza, organized an intellectual game called Storehouse of Folk Wisdom for students in grades 3 and 5 at School No. 56.

The students enjoyed exploring the world of folklore through this event. Thanks to entertaining tasks, they were able to remember the meanings of phraseological units and apply catchphrases to different situations. They compared proverbs from different cultures and showed their creativity by solving ancient riddles from I.A. Khudyakov's book Great Russian Riddles, which was available in the Presidential Library's electronic reading room. The students also attempted to visually represent well-known proverbs while understanding the essence of folk wisdom.

During the event, children were introduced to folk traditions and learned that songs, fairy tales, proverbs, and sayings convey basic moral rules and teach us about good and evil. They also learned about holidays from books from the Presidential Library collection. Among them is K.D. Dalmatov's book Russian proverbs and sayings, which were particularly suitable for decorating household items such as napkins, tablecloths, towels, dresses, and dishes (1882).

At the end of the event, students were able to enjoy book illustrations and read proverbs that were used by craftsmen to decorate household items. Afterwards, they visited an exhibition of dictionaries from the Lermontov Penza Regional Library called Treasures of the Native Word.

The collection Penza Region: Pages of History is available on the Presidential Library's portal. It contains archival documents, essays, research papers, statistical data, and other materials that cover various aspects of the region's history over different time periods.
