Murmansk readers learned resources of Presidential Library on Day of Periodicals

On February 12, 2025, the Murmansk State Regional Universal Scientific Library, where the Regional Center of the Presidential Library is operating, hosted the Press Approach: We Read Newspapers and Magazines event. The event featured materials from the collections of the Moscow State Library and the Presidential Library.

Approximately 300 attendees, including students from various institutions such as the Northwestern Institute, Moscow University of Humanities and Economics, Murmansk Arctic University, and other local colleges and schools, participated in the event.

During the event, readers learned about the diverse range of periodicals available, their various themes and target audiences, as well as their history and evolution.

During the conversation, guests were presented with visualizations of the What? Where? How? When? Everything on the pages of regional press they were shown periodicals from Kola Region that told about the history, economy, and culture of the Arctic region, as well as the people who have glorified it.

The guided tour Reading for Taste, Reason and Feelings: Periodicals of the 19th - Early 20th Centuries aroused significant interest among participants. They walked through the maze of book storage and learned about how and where newspapers and magazines are kept. During the tour, they were introduced to some of the oldest magazines from the collections of the Moscow State Library of Economics, such as Russian Bulletin (1808-1811) and Library for Reading (1834-1835). These publications preserved the bindings and covers of the 19th century, and they contained odes by Gabriel Derzhavin, fairy tales by Alexander Pushkin and Peter Ershov, and fables by Ivan Krylov. The Niva magazine from the early 20th century was also presented, and it aroused interest due to its numerous illustrations and captivating advertisements.

The Useful Collections section of the Presidential Library's portal was dedicated to providing a range of resources for users. The collection includes a diverse range of materials, both in terms of subject matter and types of publication. Within this collection, there are domestic periodicals covering various subjects, including legal, socio-political, literary, geographical, and local history topics, as well as frontline publications.

Special attention is given to the thematic collection titled Periodicals, which is available through the Presidential Library's portal. This collection offers a wealth of periodical content that is available for browsing and perusal.

Fans of team competitions took part in the game Play to Know! with enthusiasm. They answered questions about interesting facts from the history of periodicals and interesting information published in them.

The quiz The Periodicals Code was a fascinating journey through the past of magazines and newspapers, with a digital puzzle about magazines and newspapers as a bonus.

The master class Art Press: Collage on Vinyl brought together creative individuals. Participants learned how to create collages using clippings from magazines and newspapers in the collage technique. Everyone had the opportunity to create their own portrait or composition on vinyl.

Vinyl Evening with a Magazine in Hand attracted the attention of rock music enthusiasts. Participants immersed themselves in the world of classic rock, listening to legendary songs on vinyl records and exploring magazines from the MGOUNB Foundation dedicated to rock music and its artists.

During the day, exhibitions of magazines and newspapers also took place: Events. Facts. Comments, Celebrating the Anniversaries of 2025, Chronologists of Local Life: Newspapers and Magazines of the Kola Peninsula, and the retro-themed exhibition Magazines Through the Lens of Time.

On the Presidential Library's portal,  the collection Murmansk Region: Pages of History is available. It includes research papers, statistical data, archival documents, visuals, and videos that reflect various aspects of the region's history over different time periods.
