The Presidential library and seamen celebrated the day of the end of World War II

On September 2 2010 the Boris Yeltsin Presidential library mounted a conference called “Exploration of the territory of Russia. Role of the Russian Navy”. Within the framework of the event participants focused their attention on the role of the Russian Navy in formation of territories of the Russian state. On the day of 65th anniversary of the end of World War II special focus was brought to the actions of the Navy during the WWII, as well as objectives pursued by the modern Russian Navy in providing security and protection of national interests.

The day opened with a performance of musicians of the Naval Academy’s military band. More than 200 cadets and lecturers of city’s naval institutions, a year ago united under the Military educational center of the Russian Navy “N. G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy”, had a tour around the Presidential library.

A live webcast, organized with the support of “Rostelekom”, enabled lecturers and cadets from Vladivostok and less remote cities of Russia to virtually participate in the conference. Vice Admiral A. A. Rimashevsky, Head of the Military educational center of the Russian Navy “Naval Academy”, delivered the key report “Role of seamen and the Navy in development of territories of the Russian state”.

The program of the conference included presentation of the project featuring voyage of the sailing vessel “Nadezhda” (“Hope”) timed to the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit meeting in Vladivostok in 2012. Within the framework of the videoconference S. A. Ogai, rector of the G. I. Nevelskoy Moscow State University spoke about the project.

Specially for Mass Media representatives was launched a presentation of declassified multi-volumed set entitled “The Soviet Navy during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945”, which used to be a classified information, initially intended for officers, generals and admirals of the Army and Navy. Materials were unveiled by A. A. Razdolgin, captain 1st class in the reserve, assistant head on information support, Military educational center of the Russian Navy.

Many declassified editions, which are housed at special archives and are not being reprinted, still remain inaccessible to specialists. Digitization of these materials will really help to “declassify” them.
