The Presidential Library has taken part in events marking the 70th anniversary of war outbreak
June 22, 2011 the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library took part in events marking the Memory and Sorrow Day. The Library hosted a concert for veterans of war and in Volgograd region under the Library’s support was held A Long Way to Victory action.
As a part of 19th International Music Festival St. Petersburg Palaces the Presidential Library hosted a commemoration meeting in honor of 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War outbreak. It was attended by veterans of war, survivors of siege and toils of the home front.
The guests were offered a vocal and symphonic poem by Valeriy Gavrilin Letters of war performed by People’s Artist of Russia Alexey Petrenko and mezzo-soprano Olesya Petrova. Also among the performers were Children Chorus of St. Petersburg television and radio, and Konstantinovsky orchestra led by Honored Artist of Russia Sergey Slovachevsky.

The same day M. Gorky Regional Universal Research Library, Volgograd, under informational support of the Presidential Library held a historical and patriotic action A Long Way to Victory. The action was joined simultaneously by over 82 libraries of Volgograd region where the events took place according to a single scenario.
The event was attended by almost 2, 500 participants: teachers, schoolchildren, students of Volgograd region. As a part of the action they were offered a demonstration of videos and presentations featuring the role of the Navy of USSR in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 including the newsreel and posters of war time. The materials are provided by the Presidential Library.
On the eve of the events the Presidential Library issued the first volume of collected works 1941: Documents and Materials to the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War outbreak from the series Source Study and Historiography developed by the Institute of Global History, Russian Academy of Sciences. The edition contains documents and materials revealing the chronicle of events, atmosphere of the eve of war and its beginning. The edition is available in the Electronic Reading Room and on the Library’s portal.
The commemorative date The Day of Memory and Sorrow was established by the RF President Decree of June 8, 1996 in honor of victims of the Great Patriotic War.
