Exhibition of astrophotography is held at the Presidential Library

From November 10 to November 17, 2015 the Presidential Library is holding a multimedia exhibition "Astrophotography" timed to the 45th anniversary of the launch of the first lunar self-propelled machine "Lunokhod-1."

The exhibition features about 50 photos of the spectacular and unique cosmic phenomena - from simple astronomical landscapes and solar eclipses to spectacular images of the Milky Way, meteor shower, nebulae and distant galaxies inaccessible to the naked eye as well as thousands-year-old comets.

In the focus of the exhibition is the Sun and aurora polaris. The pictures were taken in various parts of the world. A characteristic feature of the works is the fact that all of them were made by the citizens of St. Petersburg. Each picture has a brief description of the object and of the equipment used for taking photos.

Launch of the first in the history of mankind lunar self-propelled machine "Lunokhod-1", designed for comprehensive studies of the lunar surface, took place November 10, 1970 and was one of the most outstanding events in the field of astronomy which had no equal in the world of space exploration.

Creation and launch of the lunar self-propelled apparatus was an important step in the study of the Moon. The idea of creating the Lunokhod was born in 1965 in the OKB-1 (at present S. P. Korolev RSC "Energia"). The self-propelled machine "Lunokhod-1" was transported to the surface of the Moon November 17, 1970 by the Soviet automatic station "Luna-17" and worked there successfully for ten and a half months. During that period the "Lunokhod-1" had made 10 540 m, transmitted to Earth 200 television and photometric panoramas and about 20, 000 pictures of small scene television. The shooting provided stereoscopic images of the most interesting features of the relief allowing a detailed study of its structure.
