The first English-Russian toponymic online encyclopedia was presented at the Presidential Library

9 February 2018

Today, the first English-Russian toponymic online encyclopedia "St. Petersburg", which contains a translation into English and transliteration of the names of all the objects of the urban environment of St. Petersburg: stations, monuments, post offices, schools, was presented in the Presidential Library . According to the event, the creation of such an encyclopedia is especially important on the eve of the biggest event - the FIFA World Cup 2018. The names of objects presented in the encyclopedia can be used on city signs, transport routes, in guidebooks and reference books for tourists.

The lack of uniformity in the spelling of geographical names is a frequent occurrence. The authors of the toponymic encyclopedia, trying to solve the problem of double standards, prepared on the basis of unified rules for the transliteration and translation into English the names of urban objects adopted in St. Petersburg in 2015. There were no such standards in Russia until now.

Representatives of the St. Petersburg regional branch of the Union of Translators of Russia, translation communities, “T-Service”, as well as teachers and students of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow City Pedagogical University and the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took part in the event.

The publication will enrich Presidential Library’s collections and will be placed on the portal of the institution. Thanks to this the encyclopedia will be available to the maximum audience.

It should be noted that to date, the Presidential Library fund has more than 600 thousand electronic copies of documents and materials on the history of Russian statehood, about 150 thousand materials are on the portal in the public domain. In all 85 regions of the Russian Federation, there are approximately 500 remote access centers and more than 30 centers in 28 countries. Thus, the documents and materials of the Presidential Library are widely represented for readers and users not only in Russia but also abroad.

The Presidential Library pays much attention to the theme of sport. On the eve of the World Football Championship, the first electronic national library of Russia is forming a digital collection and an exhibition is being prepared, where unique documents and materials about the history of Russian and world football, known players and outstanding coaches will be presented.
