Summary The Vilna province was formed in 1795 after the third section of the Commonwealth and the accession to the Russian Empire of the West Belarusian and Lithuanian lands.It was originally Vilensky district, 1796-1797.It was Vilnius governorship, and in 1797 the governorship was merged with Slonim governorship in one Lithuanian province with the provincial rule in Vilna.Since 1801, the independent Vilnius province (until 1840 was called the Lithuanian-Vilensky province).At the beginning of the 20th century, the Vilnius province included 7 counties.In 1920, the territory of the province was divided between Poland, Lithuania and Belarus
