The Znamensky Cathedral was built in 1682-1688. on the site of the Church of the Sign of Our Lady for the icon "Our Lady of the Sign", which is currently in St. Sophia Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod. The image of this icon is on the fresco of one of the tents of the Holy Gates of the Cathedral of the Sign of Znamensky. The icon painting "Our Lady of the Sign" became revered by Novgorodians in the 12th century, when, according to legend, in 1170 during the siege of the city the army of the Suzdal prince Mstislav Andreevich helped restore the enemy's attack. - The materials of the sites are used: "Novgorod State United Museum-Reserve (URL: http://novgorodmuseum.ru/muzej-zapovednik/velikij-novgorod/4-torgovaya-s...," Committee for State Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Novgorod Region "( URL: http://www.okn53.ru/svyatye-vrata-s-kel-yami-severnyy-korpus-kon-xvii-na... .
