The first issue of the newspaper "On Guard of the Motherland" was published May 1, 1918 under the name "Red Army". Later the newspaper came out under different names: "Armed People", "Fighting Truth", and from November 10, 1921 - "Red Star", as a printed organ of the Petrograd Military District. The title "Guardian of the Motherland" appears on February 4, 1938, when the newspaper becomes the organ of the Leningrad Military District. On April 7, 1940, the newspaper "On the Guard of the Motherland" was awarded the first of the district newspapers with a high award - the Order of the Red Banner. On her pages were printed satirical articles about soldiers' everyday life during the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940, signed by the pseudonym Vasya Terkin - a character created by members of the editorial board of the newspaper consisting of A. Tvardovsky, N. Tikhonov, S. Vashentsev, V. Sayanov and others. Since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the district newspaper has become a front-line newspaper. Since November 2010 - the printed organ of the Western Military District, the newspaper "On Guard of the Motherland", is published as a regional tab to the central publication of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to the newspaper "Krasnaya Zvezda". Frequency of output 1 time per week, on Saturdays .
