Ivan K. Zharin served as an ordinary member of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia near Volgograd from the end of 1994. In 1996 he was in Chechnya during the First Chechen campaign. On August 5, 1996, militants seized Grozny, a day later Russian troops entered the city. A terrible battle ensued.
