Drawing on the richest materials of the exhibition "Unbreakable Alliance?" State Museum of Political History of Russia, the authors of the film tried to give an objective assessment of the processes that took place in our country in the late XX century. Particular attention in the film was given to the description of the most acute national conflicts that broke out in the USSR in the late 1980s and the question of the complex interpersonal relations between Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Boris N. Yeltsin. The historical exhibits (books and newspapers, documentary evidence of those years, letters of voters to deputies, diary entries, addresses and slogans, referendum bulletins, photographs) revived in the story of the candidate of historical sciences A.P. Smirnov, alternating with newsreel footage. Exhibition "Union inviolable?" is part of the exhibition project "The Soviet Union: The Last Chapter" of the State Museum of Political History of Russia .
