The St. Sophia Cathedral, built in 1045-1050 . on the place of the burned wooden church commissioned by Novgorod Prince Vladimir, son of Yaroslav the Wise, was the spiritual, political and cultural center of the Novgorod Veche Republic. At present, St. Sophia Cathedral is the oldest surviving stone structure in Russia. In the interior of the church there are two ancient iconostasis - the Central (Uspensky) iconostasis and the iconostasis of the Nativity of the Virgin chapel. Before the Central iconostasis in the kyot, the icon "The Sign of the Virgin" is kept, according to legend, that saved the Novgorodians from the Suzdal raid in 1170. The main painting of the church dates back to the end of the 19th century, but on the walls of the Marier's porch and on the vault of the dome there are ancient frescoes of the 11th-12th centuries. Also, on ancient sites of internal walls and pillars there are graffiti - inscriptions of XI-XIV centuries, made by ancient Novgorodians. - The materials of the sites were used: "Novgorod State United Museum-Reserve" (URL: http://novgorodmuseum.ru/muzej-zapovednik/velikij-novgorod/1-novgorodski...; "St. Sophia Cathedral of Great Novgorod" (http://www.saintsofianovg.ortox.ru/sofiyskiy-sobor/) .
