The male Iakovo-Zheleznoborovsky monastery got its name from the village of Zhelezny Borok of the Kostroma region, near which it was built on the left bank of the river. Tebzy. The name of the village is associated with the extraction of iron ore in this area. The monastery was founded under the Grand Duke Vasily Dmitrievich about 1390 by the disciple of Sergius of Radonezh - Reverend Jacob Zheleznoborovsky, whose relics are in a cathedral under a bushel. In connection with the location on the way from Galich to Moscow, the monastery was constantly at the center of historical events. It was burned during the Tatar-Mongol and Polish-Lithuanian invasions, but again rebuilt and rebuilt. In 1450, Vasily the Dark during the campaign against Galich against Dmitry Shemyaka established a command post on the territory of the monastery. At the beginning of the XVII century. in the monastery resided and was tonsured in monasticism - Grigory Otrepiev (False Dmitry I). After the revolution, the monastery was closed and only since 1994 the restoration work began in it again. At present, the ensemble of the Zheleznoborovsky Monastery includes the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist (1761), the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (1753-1757), the Three Saints Chapel with the refectory (1811), the Kelein Building (19th century).
