Exhibition "50 years of Baikal-Amur Mainline" at Presidential Library

From July 8th to 20th, 2024, the Presidential Library hosted a multimedia exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, one of the world's longest railways. The exhibition was prepared by staff from the Regional Center of the Presidential Library based on the National Library of Buryatia.

The exhibition's opening date was chosen carefully. On July 8th, 1974, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Council of Ministers of USSR approved the decision to construct the Baikal-Amur Railway. This event marked the beginning of the 50-year celebration of BAM.

Presidential Library marks 315th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava. Little-known facts about Peter I and Charles XII presented

On July 8, 315 years ago, the largest battle of the Northern War took place, 7 kilometers from the city of Poltava, between Russian troops led by Peter I and Swedish troops led by Charles XII.

In recognition of the victory achieved by the Russian army under Peter the Great's command over the Swedish forces at the Battle of Poltava, a Day of Military Glory for Russia has been instituted, which is observed on the 10th of July.

Presidential Library – in the historical building of the Holy Synod (7:56 – 13:20)

The building at 3 Senatskaya Street, which now houses the Presidential Library, was the house of the Holy Synod, the supreme body of church and state administration for the Russian Orthodox Church until 1917. After that, it was used by the Russian State Historical Archives from 1917 until 2006. In 2009, after a major renovation, the Presidential Library opened its doors in the building.

Peter the Great referred to the victory in the Battle of Poltava as "The Great Victory", in which Russia for the first time demonstrated and realized its strength that had been restrained for many centuries. July 8th (or July 27th according to the old style) marks the 315th anniversary of the biggest battle of the Northern War, which took place near the city of Poltava between Russian troops under Peter I and Swedish troops led by Charles XII.

In honor of this victory, the Russian army under Peter the Great's command over the Swedes, the Day of Military Glory of Russia was established, which is celebrated on July 10th.

Mass explosion: documents about "rail war" declassified

The collection World War II in Archival Documents of the Presidential Library has been enriched with more than 100 documents from Soviet intelligence agencies. These include digitized archival materials about the partisan movement from 1942 to 1944.

On July 14, 1943, the Central Headquarters of the Partisan Movement ordered the initiation of Operation Rail War. The order stated that partisan formations and detachments located near railways should, in conjunction with other sabotage activities, systematically and extensively damage enemy railways by cutting railway rails in half.

About the rules of marriage, marriage "raids" and other interesting facts

The date for celebrating the Day of Family, Love, and Faithfulness was chosen with sense – it is the memorial day of the holy Prince Pyotr and Princess Fevronia of Murom. Their story of love and marital faithfulness is recounted in the rare volume "New Relations of the Murom Legend of Pyotr  and Fevronia, and the Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok" (1870), which is available in the collections of the Presidential Library.

In addition to this, the Presidential Library provides information about family traditions in our country, including rules for marriage, marriage raids, prohibitions on marriage, and other interesting facts about family life.

About the Battle for Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War

On July 10, 1941, the Battle of Leningrad began, which lasted for more than three years. On January 27, 1944, the city was finally liberated from Nazi Siege, but fighting with enemy invaders continued until August 9th.

About the incredible sacrifices made for victory in the longest battle of the Great Patriotic War readers can learn through the electronic collections of the Presidential Library. These include "Memory of the Great Victory" and "Defence and Siege of Leningrad", which provide detailed information on this significant event. Additionally, the library has collaborated with the Federal Archival Agency to create the collection "World War II in Archival Documents", which also contains valuable materials related to this period.

Access to Presidential Library's resources opened

In the halls of the electronic resources at the Russian State Library (A-110, A-115, and A-116), access to resources from the Presidential Library has been added.

The Presidential Library is an entirely digital library that collects and preserves digital copies of books, magazines, archival records of organizations, families, and individuals; copies of historical, documentary, scientific, educational, and feature films; images, photographs; audio files; and other materials. It also includes archival copies of portals of the President, the State Duma, and the Federation Council, as well as federal legislative, executive, and judicial authorities in Russia and its regions.

On the library's portal, users can find virtual exhibits, lectures given by leading scholars in the country, monographs, dissertation abstracts, manuscripts, musical scores, and maps and many others.
