The Assumption Cathedral
The Assumption Cathedral
The cathedral was established in 1677 on the ground of the former temple, which was harmed during the Time of Troubles. The first eponymous cathedral was erected here, on this place in the XII century. A building has acquired its modern look after a renovation in 1772, combining the lineaments of ancient Russian architecture and the Ukrainian Baroque. The temple avoided destruction at the time of Napoleon's invasion in 1812 and the Nazi occupation of 1941-1943. In 1930-ies the cathedral housed an anti-religious museum. Since 1941, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a functional church.
