Information technology and society: Multilanguage translator for iPhone and iPad presented

9 February 2011

Google Inc. has released Google Translate software for iOS operation system. Now users of Apple devices iPhone, iPod and iPad have a translator for 57 languages. Similar to fully fledged translation system, the mobile client is able to translate both separate words and texts as a whole, giving the machine translation quality.

New Apple device enables users to get the translation of words and sentences literally anywhere, for example, during a trip to the country, the language of which the user does not know.

Mobile application operates in two modes: a more precise version works with an online engine Google Translate - a user enters a word or text to be translated, and the system, addressing the Internet, provides the user with the most accurate translation possible, gives additional information - different word forms, synonyms, pronunciation and other information that will help the user to communicate in the unfamiliar language.

The second version of the application operates only with the 15 most popular languages, and their combination is different on different versions of Apple devices. It is known that at least the iPhone 4 and 3GS support the Russian language. In this version, user pronounces a phrase aloud, and the translator is trying to understand exactly what was said and how it can be interpreted, given the specific language.

At Google, they say that the program-interpreter, along with the other projects of the company, is capable for self-learning and over time it can learn to recognize the dialectical variations of a language.
