Memorable dates of Russia: Moscow State University launches events celebrating Mikhail Lomonosov’s 300th birth anniversary

November 19 2011 will see 300th birth anniversary of Mikhail Lomonosov. Celebrations are already underway in the scholar’s birthplace in Arkhangelsk Region. 

Moscow State University, founded by Mikhail Lomonosov, has prepared a series of events to commemorate the anniversary.

November 14 - 19 2011 Moscow State University is running The International Theoretical and Practical Conference “Mikhail Lomonosov and Modern Scientific and Education Tradition of Europe”. Speakers at its inauguration will include Rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichiy, Rector of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany) Bernd Meyer, Rector of Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University Yelena Kudryashova and others.

“Mikhail Lomonosov in the Context of Russian Culture” roundtable is scheduled for November 15.

November 15-17 is running the International colloquium “Lomonosov and Humboldt: Scientific Cooperation between Russia and Germany – from the Cradle to Present Days” – a multi-discipline conference oriented towards history and present state of Russian-German scientific cooperation. It will attract representatives of all relevant disciplines, founded by Lomonosov and Humboldt — geniuses, whose lives and tireless efforts have contributed to better intellectual development of our countries and closer relations between them.

On November 19, on 300th birth anniversary of Mikhail Lomonosov, a symbolic torch with the “Flame of Knowledge” will be delivered to Moscow State University from the scholar’s birthplace. The torch was lit on November 11 in Lomonosovo village, where the first Russian academician was born.

To mark the scientist’s anniversary students and graduates of the university will bring the “Flame of Knowledge” to the Moscow University building. Young people will follow the route once chosen by Lomonosov to reach Moscow.

On November 19 the “Flame of Knowledge” will be delivered to Moscow and will be welcomed at Mikhail Lomonosov monument in front of Moscow State University Department of Journalism.
